Arduino is a great platform for Electronic prototyping and to do some DIY's. Its very cost effective and there is whole set of sensors that can easily get integrated.
There is a bit of learning curve in terms of programming but there is lot of help available.
Mutiple boards are there, but Uno is a good one to start with.
